Any parent that is raising a teenager on this point in time knows how tough it is to get a young person to fit in with the crowd. Even the best students cave in to peer-pressure here and there, seeing little if any harm in doing something that's perfectly legal. Unfortunately, an authorized ' and potentially harmful ' substance is attracting kids in droves. Incense isn't regulated, so anyone, including children, can buy it.
K2, also referred to as "fake pot," is manufactured in China and Korea. It's sold online, and may be seen in smoke shops and stores where incense is sold. How popular is K2? Merchants who sell the pricey bags of fragrant herbs can't keep the stuff store.

What Is K2 and How are Teenagers Using It?
K2 is incense ' a blend of spices and herbs sprayed having a synthetic compound just like THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) within marijuana. The combination appears like crushed potpourri. Blends are traditionally burned in incense pots; however, teens roll the K2 incense in wrappers to produce joints, or they smoke it in pipes. When smoked, K2 delivers a high much like that relating to marijuana. Users claim it's almost impossible to see the main difference involving the two.
Sold under names like Supernova, Spice, Genie, Zohai, and Spirit, the incense is even sold by the gram, the same as marijuana. Blends of K2 include Blonde, Citron, Summit, and Standard, in order to name just a few kinds.
Is There Any Harm in Smoking K2?
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) describes the consequences of marijuana around the brain within the NIDA website article, "NIDA Info Facts: Marijuana" (no author, 7/09). "... marijuana intoxication may cause distorted perceptions, impaired coordination, difficulty in thinking and problem solving, and issues with learning and memory."
Marijuana boosts the pulse rate and irritates the lungs in much the same way as tobacco use causes respiratory problems for smokers. Marijuana might also affect mental health, contributing to depression, anxiety, and even schizophrenia.
K2 is stronger and much more dangerous than marijuana. The drug moves quickly in the lungs in to the bloodstream where it's carried along with other parts of the body, such as vital organs.
Katy Bergen with the Columbia Missourian website provided articles, "Kansas Lab Looked at Synthetic Marijuana's Effect on Brain" (Feb. 2010). Bergen writes, "But the compounds in K2 are 3 to 5 times wealthier than THC present in marijuana." And, "The psychoactive drug may cause users to have rapidly increased heart rates, loss of consciousness, paranoia and, occasionally, psychotic episodes."
Questions Parents Should Ask about Kids Smoking K2
K2 causes more intense brain-altering effects than marijuana. The "fake pot" is readily available to teens. How can a parent or gaurdian tell if a teenager (or child) is smoking K2? Parents have every reason being concerned and they are urged to ask questions:
The long-term outcomes of K2 have yet to be determined; if the experts are right and smoking K2 is determined to cause irreversible harm to mental performance, then many career dreams and goals for achievement will surely rise in smoke.
Does K2 Show Up in a very Drug Test?
Many employers require drug testing for first time and existing employees. To date, K2 does not show on drug tests, but a testing method may no doubt become available if K2 is declared illegal nationwide. By then it may be past too far for a lot of adults who test positive from frequent long-term use.
The CBS News website reports in an Associated Press article, "States Consider Banning "K2" Imitation Pot" (no author, Feb. 2010). The article states, "K2 costs between $20 and $50 for three grams ' much like the street cost of marijuana ' however with the true secret features of being legal and undetectable in drug tests."
K2 Drug May Cause Immediate Adverse Effects for Some Users
Teenagers wish to believe smoking K2 is protected, yet it's possible that a person could experience immediate side effects. Some smokers distribute. K2 users shouldn't drive after smoking a joint, as the drug effect comes even close to driving while impaired of alcohol.
It's too early to express if long-term using K2 causes permanent harm. Evidence shows that K2 has got the possibility to damage the lungs, brain, heart, and other vital organs. The drug affects different people diversely, so it's impossible to find out how it will react in a individual. A parent who suspects his teen or child may be smoking incense pays to confront the situation and have questions before any possible damage becomes evident and irreversible.
Author's note added Dec. 22, 2010: Check out my recent article on K3 and it is harmful effects. K3 will be the newest version of K2. The article comes with specifics of deaths from smoking incense, as well since the DEA's ban on selling legal incense, a.k.a. "fake pot".
